With the advent of digital photography, much of the film based infrastructure of the Photography School needed change. This interior renovation of 54,000 square feet in the Gannett Building included removal of much of the chemical photography dark rooms to be replaced with large tiered computer labs, editing stations, and printing facilities. Interiors for these spaces are “color neutral” for optimum productivity. The Film Study and Animation School has state of the art theaters, acoustically controlled recording rooms, a two story photo studio, social spaces and support facilities. The social spaces and corridors encourage student community with their energetic colors and forms. Mechanical and electrical improvements were extensive, modifying a massive exhaust system to meet today’s energy code and more concentrated occupancies. All design and construction was done within a ten month scheduling window.
